(WOODHULL,NY)- The racing community takes care of its own. We grow close to each other and help each other out no matter what the situation. Unfortunately, sometimes despite our best efforts, we lose those who helped make this sport great.
Steve Kent was an avid racer and car owner throughout his years. If it had wheels on it, Kent had his RV packed up and was the first one to set up camp for that days race. Full fenders, late models, sprint cars, dirt, NASCAR or a wheel barrel race- Kent was there.
Kent was a long time season ticket holder at Outlaw Speedway and Woodhull Raceway. He was also an avid supporter of the 100-lap Street Stock races. He was the first sponsor to pay for his lap sponsorship every year, in what was a crisp $100 bill on his beloved Lap 92.
Unfortunately, Kent suffered a heart attack and was admitted to Strong Hospital in Rochester this past February. During what was a roller coaster of steps forward and backwards, Kent passed away from complications on March 9, 2019.
The race community in the Northeast was deeply affected as Kent was a friend to all. Kent started his racing back in 1992 in the super stock division. Which his wife, Yvonne, says was the reason for his no. 92x. Kent moved into the late model division after the super stocks. That’s when he decided to be a car owner.
In 2009, Dale Welty, former, NAPA Crate Sportsman Track Champion here at Woodhull, started driving for Kent in the late model division. That year they brought home the track championship at the formerly known, Black Rock Speedway.
“His love for racing whether in the car or in the stands showed with his big smile on his face.” Yvonne said.
Jon Stuart came to Woodhull Raceway owner, Ted White, with the idea to have a Steve Kent Memorial race. White was all for it so they both set out to get it planned to honor Kent and his love for racing.
What is currently on the schedule as the ‘Woodhull 100’ will now be the ‘Steve Kent Memorial 100’. This will be a 100-lap event for the street stock division held annually at Woodhull. The date for this race is set on September 28 during ‘Full Fender Frenzy Night’.
The family, Yvonne, his wife and daughters, Erica and Ashley want to thank everyone for all the love and support shown to their family.
“He was truly blessed to have such a wonderful racing family,” Yvonne stated during an interview.
More information on the race will be given as the date approaches. The rules for the street stock race have been set open, so cars from various tracks can attend. For more information on the ‘open’ rules check out the Woodhull Raceway website or contact a tech inspector.
