(WOODHULL) – Not only does the Front Wheel Drive division have a great point race going into Championship Night, the Daugherty Auto Sales Mini Stocks have just as close a point race to decide the 2016 champion.
Ron Dailey Jr. won on Opening Night back in April and has carried great consistency to a mere four-point lead over Chris Woodard this week. Dailey has put together four victories over the course of the year, while Woodard has been streaky in picking up five feature wins.
Woodard could easily have seven wins, if not more, as he has lost a couple of drag races to the finish line. One of those finishes was to Dailey, which itself carried a five-point swing that night. Woodard was a guest on Turn 5 Live earlier this week and commented on the fact that his team has considered all the nights where a win or top five may have slipped away.
For Dailey, it's been an eventful year for the Morgan's Auto Repair No. 76. Dailey did win on Opening Night, although a non-point show, but got off to a great start. From there, it was a string of eleven out of fourteen races with a top five finish. But it wasn't an easy Saturday evening ride to those stats.
Dailey found himself leaning on his teammate Chip Warner to drive the No. 73 in an event to help maintain his point lead. He also encountered a heated battle with defending track champion Rich Sharpsteen- lighting up the internet like a Christmas tree.
But Saturday night will see the Mini Stocks go twenty laps, with Dailey and Woodard putting it all on the line to see who can call themselves the 2016 champion.
Like the Front Wheel Drives, the Mini Stock heat races will carry incredible importance with up to three bonus points on the line. Dailey has eight heat race wins, to Woodard's lone heat race win. In total, Dailey has scored 29 points through the heats whereas Woodard has only been able to muster 15 heat points.
Also like the Front Wheel Drives, the Mini Stock championship could come down to who finishes ahead of the other driver. Will is be Dailey or will it be Woodard? We will all get to find out together Saturday night at 6:30PM at "New York's Toughest Bullring."
