(WOODHULL, NY) – Lamb & Webster presented last Saturday night’s racing at Woodhull Raceway and two drivers who needed wins and hadn’t won in several years found themselves parked in Instant Heat Wood Pellets Victory Lane. Frank ‘Stunning’ Dunning (Modifieds) and Carl Hughes (360 Late Models) both kicked multi-year winless streaks.
Dunning started on the front row for the Insinger Performance 370 Modifieds and would dominate the event, leading wire-to-wire. Bobby Davis also started in the front and had the best run of 2016 for the No. 60J. Davis also is trying to kick a winless streak that extends back to 2014, and was driving his Ford powered machine to its potential.
Davis would reel in Dunning, but Dunning negotiated lap traffic with ease. Dunning would pull away at the end and claim his first victory in three years and his first of the 2016 season. This all, after going up and over several times off turn three in a heat race early in the season.
“You start to wonder if you can still do it and we got it done tonight,” said Dunning.
Davis, Eric Fisher, Cory Costa and Donnie Lawson rounded out the top five finishers.
The NAPA Crate Sportsman feature was dominated by young Jasper, NY driver Dayton Brewer. It was Brewer’s second victory of 2016 and came after starting on the pole with the luck of the draw/redraw format at Woodhull.
Stacy Jackson ran a solid race, fending off all challenges from David Mayo who had one of his best runs of this season as well. Chris Daugherty was the big mover of the event as he started in the twelfth position and passed seven cars to crack the top five in just five laps.
While Brewer led the field across the line at the checkered flag, he would later be disqualified for not passing post-race technical inspection. That would make the official top five- Stacy Jackson, David Mayo, Chris Daugherty, Josh Keesey and Brandon Butler.
Last week in the SWL 360 Late Models, Carl Hughes fell just one lap short of a victory. A last lap caution gave the 15 of Glenn Whritenour an opening and he passed Hughes for the lead.
Hughes started on the pole and jumped to the lead right away Saturday night. The action stayed towards the back of the pack as Glenn Whritenour started to pick up positions, as he had to start in the back because he won last week’s feature.
On lap 16 the caution flag came out due to two cars making contact in turn one. Mick Seeley in the No. 31 and the No. 112 of Jay McConnell were involved, but both cars were able to continue at the rear of the field.
A restart was the last thing Hughes wanted to see as he had the point leader, Bruce Miller behind him. At the restart, Hughes led with Bruce Miller in second, Steve LeBarron in third, Kurt Stebbins in fourth and Whritenour rounding out the fifth spot.
When the green flag came back out Carl Hughes gunned it to the lead with the No. 80 of Miller on his tail. The last four laps were drove caution free. The last lap was a nail bitter as Bruce Miller closed the gap on Hughes and tried to make a move in and out of all the turns.
Carl Hughes brought his 2D machine to the checkered flag for the first time since 2014 during the Scott Dennison Memorial race. Bruce Miller brought home second place while Steve LeBarron took third, Glenn Whritenour fourth and Kurt Stebbins fifth.
The Joe Willcox Performance Automatics Street Stocks started off their night with the third edition of the Clash for Cash for 2016. Brett Marlatt had a great battle with Dan Gardner, but would get by Gardner for the lead and the Clash for Cash victory.
In the regularly scheduled feature event, it looked like Kurt Stebbins would pick up another win in the division that has seen a razor-thin point race shape up. Stebbins and Whritenour battled all race long with Whritenour trying multiple times to get under Stebbins for the top spot.
The two drivers made contact on several occasions with Whritenour eventually getting by, as the two drivers rubbed rails the entire length of the backstretch. That allowed Teddy Morseman to close in and battle Stebbins for second. Though the race was pretty exciting to watch, it did not end well for Stebbins and Morseman.
The two made contact in turns one and two and again on the backstretch. The contact on the backstretch sent Morseman in a spin pointed to the outside of turn three, with him eventually coming to rest facing the right direction. Stebbins would join Morseman at the tail of the field for the restart with less than ten laps to go.
This put title contender Dylan Cecce on Whritenour’s back bumper, but Cecce had nothing for the Moose’s Enterprises No. 15 in the closing laps. Cecce settled for second, Tracy Dunn third, Marlatt fourth and Dennis Cummings making a rare Woodhull start to spin and recover to fifth place finish.
The first Quad C Challenge of the season saw Shawn Gleason win once again on the season, besting the ten-car field of rear wheel drive and front wheel drive competitors. Nate Freeland and Dave Richmond had a great battle for second with Freeland taking the runner-up spot over Richmond.
The Daugherty Auto Sales Warrior division took on its second week of non-point racing. However, the kids are getting good lap time to help further their racing skills.
Cole Youse and Trevor Hamilton took the green Saturday night, and Youse grabbed the lead at the start and pulled away from Hamilton.
Youse made it green to checkered bringing home another win, with Hamilton finishing second. The warriors will see their next point race August 6th.
