(WOODHULL, NY) – Mike Bills is determined to win the Insinger Performance 370 Modified track championship in 2016. He took one more step toward doing just that on Saturday, winning the twenty-five-lap feature event.
“Double D” Dave DuBois and Josh Nobriga led the field to Scott Lyon’s green flag. It would be a good battle on lap one, with Nobriga eventually controlling the event for the first eleven laps. A caution on that lap would slow the field and bunch everyone up for a Delaware, double-file restart.
DuBois would work his way back to the runner-up position, but the man on the move was “The Maniac” Mike Bills. Bills started in position number three and would get by DuBois for the second spot on lap thirteen.
Once in second, Bills set sail for Nobriga and the lead. Nobriga found himself in the lead late in a race for the second time in two weeks, but again this would not be Nobriga’s night.
Bills pulled up alongside Nobriga on lap eighteen and then powered to the lead as they clicked off lap nineteen. He would pull away to his second victory of 2016 over Nobriga, Cory Costa, Donnie Lawson and Billy Van Pelt.
Bills lost the point lead to Van Pelt last Saturday night, but after his feature win Saturday night, Bills now leads Van Pelt by five markers.
In the NAPA Crate Sportsman division, Brandon Butler finally unlocked the door to Instant Heat Wood Pellets Victory Lane- his first of the season. Brandon Martin and Stevie Hartman III led the field to green with Martin taking the early lead.
Martin had his best race of 2016, after having so many struggles trying to reign in his Teo Pro Car No. 43 machine. He would lead the opening twenty laps, while Hartman had one of his best runs of the season as well behind the wheel of the Nikk L Brew No. 15.
But chasing Hartman down from his fourth starting spot was Brandon Butler. Butler, driving the Hilliard Corporation No. 16, passed Hartman for the runner-up spot and now only had Martin ahead of him.
Butler would run down Martin and eventually make his move on lap twenty. Martin would lead that lap, but would not lead the following lap as Butler finally got by.
From that point, Butler stretched out the lead and never looked back for win number one of 2016. Martin had his best run of the season for second, Hartman had his best finish of the season for third with the points leader Chris Daugherty fourth and David Mayo finishing out the top five.
Daugherty now leads Mike Jackson in the point race by twenty-three points.
The SWL Awards 360 Late Models saw a second-time winner on Saturday night as Kurt Stebbins is really starting to get comfortable behind the wheel of his K&B Graphics No. 26. Stebbins would get his second victory of the season, but would face an immense amount of pressure from Glenn Whritenour and Bruce Miller to do so.
Stebbins led from the drop of the green and would lead the event wire-to-wire in the twenty-lap event. But on lap sixteen, Stebbins had contact from Miller but was able to maintain the lead after a flurry of cautions fell on that lap.
Miller would take one last shot with two laps remaining, but could not get by Stebbins for the lead. Stebbins would win the race over Whritenour, Miller who appeared to have broken something on the final charge for the lead, Carl Hughes and Steve LaBarron the top five.
Miller now leads Whritenour by thirteen points, with Stebbins closing in to only trail Miller by eighteen points.
In the Joe Willcox Performance Automatics Street Stocks, it was Dylan Cecce who took the victory in his continued efforts to pull out of the hole he has found himself in for the point race.
Tracy Dunn and Cecce led the field to the green for twenty long laps around “New York’s Toughest Bullring” and it would be Cecce out front on the opening lap. Cecce, who would never relinquish the lead, would have to survive several cautions enroute to the victory.
A lap six caution saw an incident occur with the No. 62 car of Dan Gardner. Gardner’s incident on-track would have race officials send him to the pits for the night, as he would lose his points and money for the night. He will also sit out from competition for one week as part of the penalty.
When the race resumed, Cecce would resume command in the High Up Trucking, Grip Factor, Creekside Entertainment No. 7. Teddy Morseman would make it a two-car battle on lap eleven.
Morseman and Glenn Whritenour would wage a spirited battle for the second spot, with Morseman ultimately coming away with the position. But it was Cecce out front, who collected the big win. Morseman, Whritenour, Dunn and Brett Marlatt would round out the top five finishers.
Whritenour now carries a seventeen-point lead over Morseman to next Saturday night with Cecce just twenty-one markers behind in third.
The Daugherty Auto Sales Mini Stock feature was wild, to say the least. JJ Kreidler and Ray Hyer, who have duked it out the last several weeks between Woodhull and Outlaw Speedways- found themselves in a tight battle again as they led the field to the green flag in the thirty-five-lap Mini Stock special paying $350-to-win.
Ray Hyer put his Brian Grant Jr.-owned No. 4D up on top of the leader board for laps one through six, but JJ Kreidler was hot on the trail for the top spot as well. Kreidler, fresh off a win earlier in the week at nearby Outlaw Speedway, was ready to make it his second victory of the week in his No. 79k.
Ron Dailey Jr. had his car hooked up quite well on Saturday night, taking the lead from Kreidler on lap fourteen. However, Karl Born from Williamsport, PA was going to have a say in the outcome himself. Born grabbed the lead from Kreidler on lap sixteen, after Kreidler led lap number fifteen.
Born led up until the leaders caught traffic in lap number twenty-six. Kreidler was there to take advantage and nose ahead for the top spot, but a lap car would slow him up allowing Born to lead lap twenty-seven as well.
Kreidler would resume command on lap twenty-eight, but the hard charging car was Chris Woodard who was fresh off a win last Saturday night. Woodard battled Born for second and got by, now with a shot to potentially win the race.
Woodard would catch Kreidler and make the pass for the win as the No. 79k went high with just two laps remaining. Woodard would lead to the checkered flag over Kreidler, Born, Dailey Jr. and Rick Amidon.
Born now only has a one-point margin over Woodard for the division points lead. Dailey Jr. now rides just one point behind Woodard for second. Should be an exciting summer on the High Banks to decide the Mini Stock championship.
Speaking of championships, Adam DelGrosso has admittedly not had a stellar start to his 2016 race season. DelGrosso is the two time and defending track champion of the Woodhull Auto Supply Front Wheel Drive division, but had yet to score a feature win this season. Until Saturday night.
DelGrosso took the CJSFit, McWhorter’s Maple Syrup, Turn 5 Live No. 11 from the pole position when Scott Lyon waved the green flag for twenty laps. He would not let the lead go, even after fierce challenges from point leader Shawn Gleason and division points runner-up Codie Baker.
DelGrosso, who felt the motor was laying down on him, committed to the bottom and would not waver from the bottom lane. He would go on to win his first feature of 2016 over Baker, Gleason, Dave Richmond and Jay McConnell.
Gleason now carries a ten-point lead over Baker and twenty-eight points over McConnell.
The Daugherty Auto Sales Warrior division saw rising star Ajay Potrzebowski Jr. claim his second victory at Woodhull in 2016. It was a worst-to-first effort for “The Madman” as he rolled away all by himself in the third row for the ten-lap event.
Potrzebowski and Cole Youse battled back and forth for the lead and the win, with both drivers now having two victories this season. These two are also battling for the points lead, which should make the summer stretch fun and interesting to watch.
Potrzebowski got the win over Youse, Kayley Potrzebowski, Brody Amidon and Trevor Hamilton. Youse now takes a two-point lead over Potrzebowski into the June 25th Fireworks show on the High Banks.
Next week at Woodhull Raceway, Troups Creek Auto Parts presents the King of the Ring for the SWL Awards 360 Late Models. An exciting version of dirt track racing ‘knock out’ if you have never seen the King of the Ring contest. The 360 Late Models will be joined by the Insinger Performance 370 Modifieds, NAPA Crate Sportsman, Joe Willcox Performance Automatics Street Stocks, Daugherty Auto Sales Mini Stocks and Woodhull Auto Supply Front Wheel Drives.
Pit gates will open at 3:30PM with general admission gates opening at 4:30PM with Scott Lyon’s first green flag of the night waving promptly at 6:30PM. General admission is just $12 for adults 13 and up, $6 for Seniors and ages 8-12 with children 7 and under always free at Woodhull Raceway.
