WOODHULL, NY - Tim Guild has seen a lot in his lifetime. The Rathbone, NY driver served our country well for 20+ years before ever strapping into a Crate Sportsman at Woodhull.
He worked through two tours in Iraq, which made the battle he had on the track Saturday during Ted White Trucking night with Brandon Butler a piece of cake. Guild took his Realty USA.com No. 06 to victory lane in the 25-lap NAPA Crate Sportsman Feature event in a 2009 Bowflex chassis- proving that even an older car can still get it done at the Bullring.
Guild and Bobby Peoples from Addison led the field to Scott Lyon’s green flag and they would battle for the lead early on. Once Guild was out front, he pulled out to a big lead while Peoples fell into the clutches of Butler, Collin Brown and AJ Costley.
The event took a scary turn on the front stretch as Brett Buono got crossed up, collecting John Sekoll and Josh Keesey. Keesey’s car got upside down and suffered a good deal of cosmetic damage in the flip.
The safety crew was quick to get the Savona, NY driver’s car turned back on to four wheels, but in doing so ignited a fire underneath the hood. Keesey was quick to exit the car and all drivers and crew were unharmed.
Once the green flag came back out, Guild proceeded to put a Saturday night short track whooping on the rest of his competitors. He stretched out the lead to almost a full straightaway, but with 5 laps to go, Butler started reeling him in to make it a show for the large opening night crowd on hand.
Butler pulled up to the back bumper with three laps to go and threw everything he had at Guild for the win. Guild would remain true to his line and hold off Butler for his first career Woodhull victory. The excitement in Instant Heat Wood Pellets Victory Lane was palpable.
“This is just a great night for us,” said Guild of the victory. “I have to thank everyone that gives us what we need to win- my honey, the Jackson boys and my dad Carl up in the stands that has had a rough year. This win is for Carl no doubt about it.”
Butler had to settle for second place, Chris Daugherty had an eventful night coming from the back twice to finish third. Billy Van Pelt also had an eventful night, racing for Ray Smith, to finish in the fourth spot. Zach Sutton showed great speed all night, racing in the top five for most of the feature event and coming home fifth.
The SWL 360 Late Model feature saw Canisteo, NY pilot Jason McGregor show just how fast his car was, winning the 20-lap event in dominant fashion. But to say he dominated doesn’t tell the tale of the race as McGregor fell back to as far as fifth before making a statement in his charge to the front.
McGregor led from the drop of the green, but slid out of the preferred groove and fell back to the fifth spot. ‘The Outlaw’ Dave DuBois was the driver on the other end of McGregor’s misfortune as he would assume the lead and looked like he might take the victory back home to Corfu, NY.
While DuBois paced the field, McGregor was making his charge back toward the top spot. He battled with multi-time track champion Glenn Whritenour, but not even Whritenour had anything for the 67g machine. McGregor made quick work of the 360 Late Model dominator and set sail for DuBois’ No. 012.
That all changed on lap number nine as something came apart on DuBois’ machine exiting Turn 4, handing the lead back to McGregor- a lead that McGregor would not relinquish, as he built up almost a full straightaway lead at the checkered flag.
Whritenour started his 2016 campaign with a second place finish, Carl Hughes battled Whritenour all the way to the end and came home third. Steve LaBarron had a strong run and will be a threat for the championship this season in fourth and Rick Loucks came out on top in a fierce battle for fifth.
Dylan Cecce had a lot going for him on Saturday night. He came into the event as the defending track champion of the Joe Willcox Performance Automatics Street Stocks and would roll off the starting grid in the fourth spot. The Woodhull, NY driver quickly moved up to second and digging toward the leader Branden Morseman- then it all went wrong.
Contact sent Cecce spinning in Turn 4 and the defending champ watched the entire field drive by as the caution flag was displayed. The rest of the event saw a determined driver who was not going to accept anything but a win for his team.
“I don’t know who that was over here in four but that was kind of crazy,” said Cecce. “At that point, I was upset and wanted to drive back through the field and bring back a good finish for my guys that work so hard on this car.”
Moreseman would be the rabbit early on until Brett Marlatt took over the top spot on lap 3. Tracy Dunn from Cameron Mills, NY was also on a great run, following Marlatt through the field. Marlatt went from 6th to the lead and Dunn from 8th to second in just three laps.
When the caution flew on lap 9, Marlatt led Dunn and one of the best battles on the track all night. Morseman, Teddy Morseman, Jared Hill and Gene Balmer found themselves locked into a fight for the top five and kept the fans entertained all race long. Cecce had even made his way back to the top ten at this point as well.
Just seven laps later, Cecce and Marlatt were in a battle for the lead with Cecce taking over the top spot on lap 16 with four to go. Cecce would go on to take his first win of the season over Marlatt, Dunn, Teddy Morseman and Branden Morseman.
The Daugherty Auto Sales Mini Stock feature was dominated by Ron Dailey Jr out of Rathbone, NY. Dailey drove his Morgan’s Auto Repair, Ardpro.com No 76 from the front row at the green flag and never looked back, leading all twenty laps enroute to victory.
Jeffery Daugherty raced within the top five for most of the night until a flat tire took him out of the running late in the event. Karl Born had himself a great night coming home with a runner-up finish on opening night in the No. 06.
Brian “Corky” Grant had a solid night to start out his 2016 campaign with a third place finish. Chris Woodard and Rich Sharpsteen filled out the top five with Sharpsteen limping the Flyin’ X car home with what was determined to be a problem under the hood.
The Woodhull Auto Supply Front Wheel Drives had an exciting finish, as Joe Birdsall proved why you never give up until Scott Lyon has the checkered flag in hand. Birdsall and McKean County regular Kurt Babcock took the green from the second row and would find themselves locked in a battle for the victory on opening night.
Birdsall, known in the pit area now as ‘puddin’, worked and worked to get around Babcock for the first 18 laps of the event. Babcock only slipped up once in Turn 4 and Birdsall pounced, taking the lead with two laps to go. Birdsall drove two flawless laps to get the win over Babcock, Nate Freeland, Dave Richmond and defending champion Adam DelGrosso.
The Woodhull Warriors sponsored by Daugherty Auto Sales saw five new cars enter for the first event of 2016, with only 1 of those drivers ever having turned a wheel on the high banks before. There was a good mix of drivers with previous go-kart experience and drivers taking to a dirt track for the first time ever.
Ajay Potrzebowski Jr was the driver that came out victorious on opening night, as he held off a hard-charging Cole Youse for the win. ‘The Madman’ started the event from the pole but the Horseheads, NY driver had to fend off charges from veteran Trevor Hamilton and a late race charge from Cole Youse.
Potrzebowski was up to the challenge and now carries a perfect record into week two next Saturday night. Youse finished second, Hamilton third, rookie Brody Amidon in for fourth place and Kayley Potrzebowski fifth. Kayley, who celebrated a birthday this week, fought her car all night long and will be back next Saturday ready to give her fellow drivers a run for their money.
Next week at Woodhull Raceway will feature a $1,000-to-win event for the NAPA Crate Sportsman with the racing action being presented by Lias Racing Tires and Insinger Performance. The Crate special will be joined by the SWL 360 Late Models, Joe Willcox Performance Automatics Street Stocks, Daugherty Auto Sales Mini Stocks, Woodhull Auto Supply Front Wheel Drives and Daugherty Auto Sales Warriors.
Pit gates will open at 3:30PM with general admission gates opening at 4:30PM with Scott Lyon’s first green flag of 2016 waving promptly at 6:30PM. General admission is just $11.
