(WOODHULL, NY) – The Joe Willcox Performance Automatics Street Stock division hosted one of the many close point races of the season, with three drivers having a mathematical shot at the title on Championship Night. Wellsville, NY pilot Kurt Stebbins survived it all, including a major mechanical issue on Championship Night, to lock down his first Woodhull track championship.
If not for a backup car driven by teammate Dennis Cummings, Stebbins’ championship hopes may have been dashed. After the heat races, Stebbins had pretty much wrapped things up and just needed to log a solid finish to claim his first Woodhull title. Stebbins spoke to how stressful chasing the championship was, which would make one wonder just what their team’s goal will be in 2017. The team recently added a Crate Late Model to their arsenal, in preparation for Woodhull’s addition of that division for the upcoming season.
Stebbins, a former winner of the Empire 100 in 2014, added another Empire 100 win to his resume in October at Outlaw Speedway. But not before winning a thriller in the Woodhull 100 on September 24th. Between the track championship, a $750 special victory, the Woodhull 100 win and four regular season wins- it was a dream year for the Stebbins and KB Graphics crew.
Teddy Morseman and Tracy Dunn were the other main contenders for the title in 2016, with Dylan Cecce, Brett Marlatt and Glenn Whritenour also being major factors to win races in this ultra-competitive division. Morseman’s year was certainly up and down, with a bad break on championship night being the final nail in the coffin.
Dunn, on the other hand, was one of the most consistent drivers of the season but fell just short of gracing Instant Heat Wood Pellets Victory Lane on several occasions. Cecce and Whritenour both had strong seasons in the Street Stock division, but midseason slip ups put them out of contention come the month of August.
Other highlights of the season saw Brett Marlatt get a victory in a new car for Team 99. Josh Sawyer made the wife upset late in the season, as he won a race when she wasn’t in attendance when he debuted a new piece on championship night.
All of Woodhull Raceway’s track champions will be crowned on Saturday night at the Watson Homestead & Conference Center in Painted Post, New York. Cocktail Hour kicks off at 5:30PM, with dinner and awards taking place immediately afterwards. Turn 5 Live on the Performance Motorsports Network will be recording a LIVE episode of their weekly dirt track racing program throughout the event and will interview all of the champions and many other drivers and special guests.
