(WOODHULL, NY) – It was a wet and wild Saturday night at Ted White’s Woodhull Raceway as rain intervened after the first set of heat races were run off. Track crews and drivers were credited with getting the racing surface back to racing condition and the fans certainly were credited with their patience as everyone in attendance wanted to see some racing on the Bullring. B&W Towing, Repair and Parts was the presenting sponsor for Saturday night’s show.
Lee Bills and Dave DuBois started on the front row of the Insinger Performance 370 modified feature event. Right from the drop of the green flag you knew the race was going to be a good one because Lee Bills was right there on the high side.
DuBois took the lead coming out of four and by the time the cars came out of turn two a caution was called. The 78 of Billy Van Pelt was in the infield and the 3 car of Fran Hilton came to a slow stop on the back stretch.
On the restart Lee Bills took the lead. Lap two saw caution number two of the night come out with the No. 12x of Dillon Groover coming to a slow stop on the back stretch. Lee Bills lead lap number two as the caution for Groover was thrown.
Lee Bills sat on the front row by himself for the Delaware-style restart. On the restart Bills got spun completely sideways as the green was thrown. This collected some other drivers, with Donnie Lawson and Mike Bills getting flat tires and going pitside while Groover was up on the high side of turn four. Lawson and Bills got their tires changed and got back on the track before the start of the race.
DuBois went to the lead on the restart with the green flag action resuming for the rest of the twenty-five lap race. DuBois continued to lead as the No. 78 of Billy Van Pelt went to the high side and started gaining positions every turn.
Another car that had a great night was the Herrington-owned No. 1 of Ransomville, NY-pilot Boyd McTavish. After a frustrating go of things Wednesday on Short Track Super Series Night, McTavish bounced back on his birthday to record his best finish of 2016.
Battles for positions carried throughout the pack. On lap nineteen Van Pelt was battling Ryan Tracy for the fourth position. The top four cars started to break away from the rest of the pack, with DuBois continuing to lead every lap from the last restart to the checkered flag.
Van Pelt made his way to Russell Morseman in third. Van Pelt went high but the car didn’t stick and he lost his battle for third and had to settle for fourth. DuBois took the checkered with MacTavish coming home in second, Morseman came in third and Van Pelt had to settle for fourth.
The NAPA Crate Sportsman moved up a spot in the order of events due to rain. The last sportsman race was Wednesday night under the Grit Series and the Short Track Super Series. The race ended on a bad note for Stacy Jackson but he redeemed himself Saturday with a brand new car and engine.
Jackson in the No. 31 car took the lead from the initial green flag. On lap three the cars got three wide and loose and a couple cars got into the yuke tires and a caution was called. On the restart Jackson sat in first, Josh Keesey in second and Tim Guild in third.
When the green flag dropped, Keesey in the No. 4 got by Jackson but Jackson was a man on a mission and took the lead right back and lead lap three. Jackson would continue to lead as another caution on lap ten came out. The No. 22jz of Chris Daugherty got tagged and spun around on the exit of turn four.
On the restart Jackson was still in the lead with Keesey in second, and Dayton Brewer in third. The pack restarted single file and Jackson went back to making his lead bigger.
Three laps later Jake Dgien and Jerry Aldrich made contact and ended up on the high side of turn four calling the caution.
Jackson still leading the pack went under green flag racing again. On lap fourteen Chris Daugherty found himself about halfway through the pack again, trying to gain positions for points. Jackson started pulling away from the rest of the pack.
On lap eighteen, the caution was called because the No. 12w of Scott Tubbs was facing the wrong way. He got turned back around and green flag action continued. Jackson continued to lead the race all the way to the checkered flag, completing the comeback after Wednesday’s incident. Keesey brought home second and Dayton Brewer took home the last spot on the podium.
Glenn Whritenour had a big night at Woodhull Saturday, winning both the SWL Awards 360 Late Models and the Joe Willcox Performance Automatics Street Stock features. Whritenour started on the front row with Kurt Stebbins for the Late Model feature, and everyone knew it would be a battle as there has been quite a rivalry between these two all season long.
Whritenour captured the early lead, while Bruce Miller began his charge from the back to the front in the first four laps. He made it to fifth on the fourth lap when caution was displayed for a spun Steve LaBarron in his No. 29.
Miller got to third before a caution came out on lap nine as he battled Stebbins for position. Miller would get by Stebbins on the restart and would set his sights on the multi-time Late Model track champion.
Whritenour worked the top lane to perfection and would force Miller to try and get it done on the bottom lane, but he could not get it done. Whritenour would go on for his fourth 360 Late Model victory of 2016 over Miller, Stebbins, Jason McGregor and LaBarron the top five.
In the Street Stock feature, Tracy Dunn was trying to get it done for the first time of 2016 in his ‘Re-Dunn Chassis’ that is his own twist on the Potter Chassis. Jeredd Dennis started out the race battling with Whritenour for second, with Whritenour getting the position.
Whritenour would take the lead on lap three in turn four and would put the Joe Willcox Performance Automatics, Moose’s Enterprises, Painter’s Meat Processing No. 15 at the top of the board. Dunn wouldn’t go away easily, but would never be able to reclaim the top spot.
Dan Gardner had a great race in the No. 62 on Saturday night. Unfortunately, Gardner’s run came to a halt, as he got sideways on lap twelve, collecting Stebbins and Brett Marlatt who had already had an eventful race up to that point.
The driver on a mission though was Teddy Morseman in the No. 44. Morseman, who is trying to chase down Stebbins for the track championship, moved up to the fourth spot on lap seven and eventually to third place around Dennis on lap eighteen.
While everyone was dicing behind him, Whritenour went on to score the Late Model/Street Stock double-dip. Dunn held on for a strong second place finish over Morseman, Dennis and Stebbins who recovered for a top five.
Ron Dailey Jr. is another driver trying to will his team to a championship in 2016 and started the twenty-lap up front. Ray Hyer and Karl Born made it a three-car battle for the lead on laps three and four with the trio going three-wide to put on an excellent show for the fans who waited all night to see some close and competitive racing.
Ray Hyer eventually took the lead and dominated the rest of the event, scoring a convincing win- his second of 2016 at Woodhull. Dailey and Born battled each other hard throughout the race, but a late caution saw Born get by for the runner-up spot.
Chris Woodard got by Dailey before the checkered flag flew, but lost points to Dailey who finished fourth. Dailey scored three heat race points, where Woodard did not score any. Dailey now leads Woodard by seven in the championship race with two races remaining for points.
Corky Grant had his best run since June 18th, with a top five effort.
The Woodhull Auto Supply Front Wheel Drive class went caution-free for their twenty-lap feature event with a new winner in victory lane.
The green flag dropped and the No. 26 of Nate Freeland took the lead but it was short lived as the 93 of Matt Prescott took it over. On lap three they got three-wide, but kept the racing under green flag action.
By lap five the field was pretty much spread out and Matt Prescott continued to lead. The No. W41 of Ron Hill started to close the gap and was working on second battling with Codie Baker.
Matt Prescott continued to lead as he approached slower traffic, to put them a lap down. He got around the lap car and continued to lead. Second, third and fourth place were right on top of each other as lap eleven went on the board.
The No. 711 of Carl LaBarron struggled to get going but continued to make his way around the track. Hill got by Baker and started to close the gap on Prescott.
On lap sixteen, Prescott got held up by another car and Hill made his move to get by along with Baker getting by Prescott. Hill would continue to lead until the checkered flag with Baker coming in second and Freeland coming in third.
This Saturday at Woodhull Raceway, the 270 Micro Sprints return for their makeup feature from August 13th. They will also compete in a full show on this night, as they travel great distances to compete at Woodhull Raceway. It is also the annual Legends of Woodhull Reunion sponsored by Swarthout Recycling, which always brings back some of Woodhull’s legendary drivers of yesteryear.
