(WOODHULL, NY) – Brady Fultz had made four starts at Woodhull Raceway going into Saturday night, with half of those starts ending in top fives. After Saturday night’s twenty-five lap feature win, add another tally in the top five column and a big tally in the “W” column.
Fultz was strong right off the trailer, winning his heat race and having the luck of the draw allow him to start from the front row for the feature event. The Dundee, NY native would be the rabbit early on, making the Troyer Racecars, Barney Moravec Water Wells No. 70 glide around the High Banks.
Kenny Peoples Jr. looked to have an equally fast car, with Peoples looking to take advantage of Fultz in lap traffic around the halfway portion of the event. But Peoples would have something let loose on his No. 5k, spraying hot liquid on his feet and requiring him to pull off the top of turn three and rolling to a stop near the fire/ems crew.
On the restart, Dillon Groover found himself on Fultz’ back bumper, but Fultz would pull away late to get his first victory of 2016. Groover held on for second over Josh Nobriga, Mike Bills and Billy Van Pelt.
Chris Daugherty also used the luck of the draw to find himself on the front row for the twenty-five lap NAPA Crate Sportsman feature event. Daugherty would go untouched in this event, leading wire-to-wire for the win.
Josh Keesey would make it interesting late in the going, but Keesey could only get to half-a-car-length off Daugherty’s back bumper at his closest. Keesey even tried the outside lane to try and use momentum to swing around Daugherty. But Daugherty was hooked up in the slick on the bottom of the track, making it look easy.
A caution with one lap to go would give Keesey one more shot, but Daugherty was up to the challenge for his fourth victory of 2016 at Woodhull. Keesey finished second over AJ Costley, a hard-charging Dayton Brewer and Collin Brown.
Kurt Stebbins had a career night on the High Banks Saturday night, sweeping both the SWL 360 Late Model and Joe Willcox Performance Automatics Street Stocks feature event.
Stebbins had his KB Graphics and Wraps No. 26 late model hooked up to perfection, as he would wrestle the lead away from Jason McGregor early on to take the lead. Mick Seeley ran second for a good portion of the event, in his best effort of 2016, but would fall the fourth in the final tally.
Bruce Miller tried to close the gap on Stebbins late in the event, but Stebbins would not be denied on this night. Miller had to settle for the runner-up position, followed by Mick Seeley, Steve LaBarron and Wally Wade.
When it came to the Joe Willcox Performance Automatics Street Stocks twenty-lap event, Stebbins would make a daring move on Branden Morseman as the pair came to the white flag to seal the victory.
Morseman started in the fifth spot and would move up to the point on a failed restart. Brett Marlatt was called for a jumped start and was to move back to the second position, moving Kane Stebbins to the top spot.
Kane did not answer the call over the one-way radio system, prompting officials to bump up the next running car that would answer the call to move up into position. Stebbins was later removed from the race once officials confirmed that an operating one-way radio was not present in the No. 2, as is required by Woodhull Raceway rules.
This gave Morseman the opportunity to race in clean air, but Stebbins was on his back bumper for that entire time- just waiting for an opportunity or a mistake. That opportunity came as the field exited turn four to take the white flag, as Stebbins took the Cummings Trucking No. 26 to the top shelf to take the lead.
The move snookered Morseman and was the difference in the race, as Stebbins went on for the sweep over Dylan Cecce, Morseman, Tracy Dunn and Jeredd Dennis.
Chris Woodard was primed to win his fourth feature of 2016, but there was one small problem. He opened the door for Ron Dailey Jr. on the last corner of the last lap. Dailey Jr. squeaked by to win the Daugherty Auto Sales Mini Stock feature was less than a foot over Woodard.
Karl Born led the event early on, before giving away to Woodard, who had the Harris Logging No. 97 singing around “New York’s Toughest Bullring.” Dailey Jr. was having his best run in the ArdcoPro.com No. 76 in several weeks, and started applying the pressure to Woodard with a handful of laps to go.
Woodard never waivered…until turn four on the final lap when the car pushed out just enough to allow Dailey to stick his nose in there to challenge for the win. The drag race to the line was won by Dailey Jr. over Woodard, JJ Kreidler, Born and Rick Amidon.
Nate Freeland didn’t wait for the last lap to show some heroics to win the Woodhull Auto Supply Front Wheel Drive feature event this week. He did show a great deal of patience though, as he had the best seat in the house for a classic battle for the lead between Joe Birdsall and Codie Baker.
Birdsall and Baker put on a show for the fans that stayed to see this exciting feature event. The two were side-by-side for a majority of the event on the straightaways. Birdsall would lead a lap, then swap the lead with Baker and Baker would lead a lap.
One time exiting turn four though, Birdsall bobbled and Freeland filled the gap in his No. 26 to take over the second spot. Freeland would then work over Baker for the lead, eventually taking the spot with just a few laps remaining. Baker would finish second over Birdsall, Shawn Gleason and Adam DelGrosso.
Ajay Potrzebowski Jr. made it win number three of 2016 on Saturday night, and will now reclaim the points lead over Cole Youse by doing so. Potrzebowki had to be patient as well, working by early race leader Trevor Hamilton.
Potrzebowski was trying to catch the No. 8 of Cole Youse for second, when Youse’s car spun all on it’s own in turn four to give ‘The Madman’ the second spot. A great restart allowed Potrzebowski to get by and take the lead for good in the BFR, Pro Signs No. 72.
Potrzebowski would lead Youse, Brody Amidon, Kayley Potrzebowski and Hamilton across the line.
Next week at Woodhull Raceway, it will be a complete show with the Insinger Performance 370 Modifieds, NAPA Crate Sportsman, SWL Awards 360 Late Models, Joe Willcox Performance Automatics Street Stocks, Daugherty Auto Sales Mini Stocks and Woodhull Auto Supply Front Wheel Drives.
